Many heart problems develop gradually and may initially present with almost no visible signs. This is precisely why a timely cardiology exam is especially important for older patients, when a heart murmur is present, or before anesthesia and surgery.

It is important for pet owners to monitor their pet for changes in behavior and physical condition.
Symptoms that may be associated with heart disease include:
Shortness of breath and sudden fatigue
- Rapid or labored breathing
- Breathing with an open mouth in a calm environment (especially in cats)
- Fainting (syncope)
- Bluish discoloration of the tongue or mucous membranes
- Low body temperature
If any of these symptoms are present, it is recommended not to delay to see a vet as soon as possible.
Depending on the individual patient and the reason for consultation, the examination may include a combination of diagnostic tests. These allow assessment of both the structure of the heart and its function, as well as the impact on breathing and the patient’s overall condition. The examination may include:
a Cardiology Examination
A cardiological consultation is particularly recommended for:
- Routine annual check-ups for patients over 8 years of age
- Adult patients prior to anesthesia or surgery
- Patients with heart murmurs
- Patients with endocrine disorders
(hypothyroidism or hyperthyroidism) - Patients with heartworm disease (Dirofilaria immitis)
For these patients, a cardiology examination is often an important part of the overall health assessment.
