Orthopedics is a branch of veterinary medicine that deals with diseases, injuries, and disorders of the musculoskeletal system – bones, joints, ligaments, tendons, and muscles.
In addition to fractures resulting from trauma, many dogs and cats suffer from orthopedic conditions that are either genetically inherited or acquired during growth. Some of these conditions may manifest as early as the first few months of the animal’s development.
Early detection is important because, for many of these conditions, timely intervention significantly improves the long-term prognosis and quality of life.

Limping in young animals is not always the result of trauma. It is often associated with an orthopedic condition.
Among the most common conditions are:
- hip dysplasia;
- avascular necrosis (Legg-Calvé-Perthes);
- osteochondrosis of the knee, shoulder, or hock joint;
- patellar luxation;
- panosteitis;
- elbow dysplasia;
- congenital luxation/subluxation of the shoulder joint;
- hypertrophic osteodystrophy.
If you notice limping, a change in gait, reluctance to move, or pain during exercise, it is advisable to have your pet examined by an orthopedic veterinarian.

for an Orthopedic Exam
During orthopedic consultations, the following are often required:
- light sedation to allow for a complete and objective orthopedic examination;
- specific X-rays necessary for an accurate diagnosis.
Therefore, we recommend that the patient fast for at least 12 hours before the examination.
